SpiceMas 2010! CARNIVAL - Monday Night Mas

One of the last events of Carnival is Monday Night Mas, appropriately taking place on Monday night from around 9:00 PM until about midnight.  Alike Jouvert, Monday Night Mas is a parade celebration where anybody can participate.  For this event you choose a team and purchase a kit containing a shirt, hat, glowstick and a cup, which gets filled with alcohol along the parade route.

We decided to join the Carib (the local brew) team, and went to the brewery at 1pm on Sunday to purchase our kits.  Each kit cost $65 EC (about $25 US). My kit included a yellow Carib cup, tank top, a green glittery mask with lights, spikey light-up bracelet and necklace and a light up wand.  CW's kit included a yellow Carib cup, a T-shirt, a light-up jester hat, a spikey light-up bracelet and a light up wand.

We paraded down through the streets of St. George's to local Soca music (Soca = Soul-Calypso). There was a music truck with a DJ and speakers toward the front of our team, one in the middle and a beer truck at the rear.  We stayed pretty close to the beer truck.

SpiceMas 2010! CARNIVAL - Jouvert

This past week was SpiceMas 2010, a.k.a. Carnival, in Grenada.  It was a little over a week filled with competitions and celebrations from August 2nd - August 11th.

Here are some pictures from Jouvert, a paint parade in the streets of St. George's that starts on the second Monday of Carnival around 5:00 AM and continues through dawn.

3:00 AM before the fun started, having a few beers at various bars in St. George's

Around 4:00 AM the Carib Team bus arrived with our yellow paint

It started with a layer of yellow

We found the red team from Bananas!

The sun is starting to rise...

And we found our friends Sherry and Monty!

A video clip of us celebrating at Jouvert

Based on our colors, I think we joined every team!

Here's the blue team!

Not a real gun, in case you're wondering.  Just part of the revelry!

A local with a University of Maryland shirt! I was thrilled to see this!

The sun is all the way up now!

Looking back the way we came

Taking a rest with some water

The parade continues on down the street

How we looked when we arrived home at 8:00 AM...CW is almost clean under his shirt

Back to the rock...Grenada!

Well, it has almost been a week since we returned to Grenada and we are nicely settling into our new apartment digs in True Blue.  We are also very excited to have Huckleberry, our almost-five-year-old puggle, along for the adventure!

It is also great to be back in our own apartment again.  Over the past year we left our apartment in Baltimore, moved in with CW's mom, Nancy, got married, moved to Grenada (where we lived in a dorm room) and then moved back from Grenada with Nancy for the summer.

Here are some images of our new place...

The front of the house (not all ours, subdivided into apartments).

Our front doors - one leads to the living room, the other leads to our kitchen

The tropical beauty just outside our front door

Inside the front door, the living room and Huckleberry

Our living room

A little area that we refer to as the "Origami Tsunami"... I keep myself busy with all kinds of art!

Side view of the living room and the hallway that leads to the bedrooms/bathroom

The kitchen!

Huck thinks I am taking his picture in every room...it's like playing Where's Waldo

Entering the bathroom

The shower - I like the dual shower curtain action

A seperate toilet room...essential when living with a guy...

Our bedroom with CW modeling the full-size bed (which is a little cramped with two adults and a dog).

Guest room/Nancy's room/Storage for now

The patio and where Huck goes to run and play in the sunshine

A quick clip of Huck and I playing

A fruit tree (not sure what kind of fruit) that always has tons of butterfly moths around it

A citrus fruit tree (again unsure of the exact kind of citrus, we'll see once its ripe)

WE HAVE OUR OWN STARFRUIT TREE!!! My personal favorite!

Starfruit galore! And our landlady is so sweet that she lets us pick and eat as much as we want!

HUGE palm tree in our backyard

Mango tree

Another unidentified fruit tree...we'll find out what it is soon though!
